Windows Live Essentials

Breaking news - Office Web Apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) are now available at office.live.com. If that link doesn't work for you, try this one. Create a new Word or Excel document to try things out.

As well the new Wave 4 has started appearing as part of the update to Windows Live Internet Web services - you'll know by the change in appearance of the Live web page header where it'll have links to Hotmail, (Web) Messenger, Office and Photos.

The beta (i.e., trial) version of Windows Live Essential 2011 - as it's now known - was refreshed on August 17 and you can install from http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta.

Browse the Windows Live page (click the menu link on the left or click here) to see what you can do with the free Windows Live programs and services.

Windows Live consists of:

  • Live Essentials: free software such as Live Mail, Live Messenger, Live Photo Gallery and Live Movie Maker that you download and install; and
  • Live Internet Services: free online services such as Live Calendar, Live Hotmail, Live Spaces for your own website, Live Photos and Live Skydrive for online storage of photos and documents.

News: Live Essentials has had a minor update as of May 12. This will be the last version for Windows XP. Get the update from download.live.com.

This week webDotwiz has some more hints on using the new Hotmail's Insert menu toolbar to send photos and documents in your emails - no need to any longer worry about the total size of your attachments with the help of Live Skydrive.

Everybody now has the new Hotmail. Get the best out of it, such as seeing how to use Sweep to clean out your inbox, creating and managing folders, and reading just emails from your social contacts or those containing photos that family and friends have posted.
